The climate of Budapest is continental, with warm summers and cold, cloudy and humid winters. The average annual temperature is 10.2 °C (50.4 °F), with the monthly mean temperature ranging from −1.3 °C (29.7 °F) in January to 22.5 °C (72.5 °F) in July. Despite its inland location, the climate of Budapest is influenced by the humid continental climate of the Pannonian Plain to a significant degree, as well as by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea through the Balkan Peninsula and Italy, respectively.
Precipitation is rather low throughout the year, but most frequent from May to June and in September/October; spring and autumn are transitional seasons while winter and summer are relatively dry periods. However, heavy rainfalls can occur even during these months: on average, snow cover lasts for about two-three weeks from mid-January to early February.
Overall, precipitation is adequate and generally distributed throughout the year; light rain or drizzle occurs on an average of at least one day per month. Sunshine duration averages around 2200 hours annually.
The highest temperatures generally occur in July and August; maximum temperatures above 35–37 °C (95–99 °F) are not uncommon but not long-lasting: heat waves with temperatures around 40 °C (104 °F) or higher last for only 1–2 days – although persistent maximum temperatures around 30–33 °C (86–91 °F) with high humidity may occur even during summer nights – whereas temperatures close to 0 °C (32 °F) can be expected even in mid-summer during short periods associated with cold spells arriving from Northern or Eastern Europe."
